Libya
The Libyan government of national unity, finally moved into an official premises in the center of the capital Tripoli.
The Fayez al-Sarraj led government was previously working from a naval base in Tripoli, this current move is seen as a further step to assert its authority.
The Government of National Accord (GNA), which has the backing of the UN and the international community since its installation on March 30, has been working to stabilize a deeply divided country where the Islamic State group (IS) is also present.
“We took over the seat of the presidency of the government after more than a hundred days on the naval base and this means that the unity government will (be able to) get down to work,” Moussa al -Kouni, Deputy Prime Minister told journalists.
On March 30, Fayez al-Sarraj and his team, landed at the port of Tripoli, braving the hostility of the internationally unrecognized authorities whose word was law in the Libyan capital since August 2014.
The arrival of the GNA had rekindled hopes of relief in the political, security and economic crisis that is dividing the north African country split among armed militias and bruised by violence since the uprising that ousted Moammar Gadhafi in 2011.
Till date the GNA has not been recognized by the rival authority based in the east. The authorities based in the east refused to cede power without a vote of confidence, repeatedly postponed, Parliament is affiliated to them.
